Information
After a long discussion on the CSS Forum and with help from Trevor aka 'ClevaTreva', I have revisited this menu and adapted it to fit in a definition list. You will see that the css is much reduced and that the width of the button on the vertical menu is controlled by the outer 'dl' width. This allows the button to resize with increases in font sizes.
The horizontal list requires just three small change to the CSS. These can be seen at the end of the CSS in this page's source code.
Works in IE5.01, IE5.5 (although the text is fixed), IE6, Opera 7.23, Mozilla, Firefox and NN7.

Added the second vertical menu to show how to style a 'selected' button.
